Dear Professor Coppola,
My name is Jasmine Menoscal and I am currently in my second semester as a freshman in the City College of New York. I am also currently undecided but I am definitely looking into the medical field. I was interested in majoring in either Chemistry, Biology, or Psychology but I am still not sure which path I would like to take. My end goal is to be an oncologist, which are doctors who specialize in cancer. I believe science is one of the most important things to know because it has led us to many discoveries and has also led us to create a better world whether it is better health or technological advances. Science and its relevance in my life are that since I want to become a doctor, I need to know everything about the human body, know how to diagnose a person, and knowing what treatments would be recommended and maybe even needed to save a person’s life. The cure for cancer is a mystery and for many to be conducting research constantly gives me hope that one day there will be a cure for cancer as well as better treatments for other heard to treat illnesses.
The reason I wish to specifically become an oncologist is that many of my family members have passed away from cancer and are currently suffering from it. My true motivation stems from the fact that my mother passed away from this horrible and hard to treat illness. From a young age I had to watch her become weaker and weaker as time passed. Wishing I knew how to help her physicaly, I realized in those moments that I knew I wanted to become an oncologist. Science being this relevant in my life makes me all the more excited to be taking courses like this one because I know I would be taking steps towards becoming a doctor and helping others. My goals for this semester are to maintain a high grade point average, learning how to read and write better, and hopefully determining what I would like to major in. My overall goals in life are to take the necessary steps in being an oncologist in the future to help those around me, seel those who need medical attention, and helping those who cannt afford it or struggling. I do not know the pain that cancer takes on but I have seen the way it manipulates lives, making people weak and fragile both physically and mentally. Having that ability to help a person physically by means possible, mentally, and finacially is the best and most pure intention I have. I am looking forward in seeing how interesting writing in the sciences can be, how it better enhances my writing, and having better knowledge.
Cordially,
Jasmine Menoscal
